I wonder if the Taiwanese and Chinese governments' reactions to Hallyu are similar to their reactions to the influx of American culture and media-- or are they more critical of Korean shows because they are somewhat competitors in the larger Asian entertainment and media market?

The Chinese look down on the Koreans. In some ways I can understand that, but I am always rooting for the Koreans. Basically, the Chinese, due to their history and national pride, think themselves superior to other Asian races/nations. That is why they react negatively to Hallyu - its a reversal of cultural positions, and they see it as abnormal. [psychologically, it is the same reason why they hold on to Tibet]. Western culture is more acceptable to the Chinese because they admire Europe and America. They are jealous of the West too, but they admire the West whereas they look down on other Asian nations.

Don't ask me to be PC - I hold the truth in too high of regard. I am not ethnically asian in any way, but I am fascinated with all of Asia, and travel here whenever I can. I think my opinion is un-biased, though I will admit I am biased for my own opinion.
